However, nowadays, the situation isn’t the same. Many people move to urban areas and cities for a better life. Unless you are using modern types of farming like Hydroponics, you need soil to pot your plant. So, before we go to make soil. Let’s have a quick look at the types of soil.

Types of Soil

If you look into Google/, you will find various types of soil. Some will say there are 4 types of soil, some argue there are 3 types of soil and some will even extend them to 6 types of soil.

But let’s keep it simple, here are four types of soil.

Clay soil

  • Clay soil, just like its name, is like clay. It is made up of fine fine grained soil and has high water retention properties. This type of soil can hold up water for long durations. Plants like Daylily, Kale and peas love such types of soil.

Sandy Soil

  • Polar opposite to Clay soil, sandy soil has extremely poor water retention properties. They are not ideal for gardening or any kind of farming. You can easily find these soil types in desert and arid environments. They are not only poor in water retention but also have low nutritional values for the plant. However, some plants like cactus, Lavender, Rosemary and Thyme love these soil and are used as their potting material.

Silt Soil

  • Silt soil lies in between clay and sandy soil. It is a grainy soil with hints of crystals, sediments and other minerals. This is a go to soil for many gardeners. It holds water but does not retain for a long time. If you have good drainage for the water, it is an ideal soil mix for your plants. Some common plants that love silty soil are roses, tomatoes and ferns.

Loamy Soil

  • Finally, the loamy soil. Arguably the best of all the soil mentioned above. This type of soil can be made at home as well. It usually includes part of sandy soil, silt and clay soil in a ratio of 2:2:1. It is widely used for plants because it has good water retention properties and also locks the nutrients in the soil.
